There are a few of us in here chasing that holy grail. I keep reminding myself if it was easy there would be a tool out there for it. There are tools in CarveCo that I’ve played around with that help you sculpt off of a photo relief which starts as a lithophane type relief but it’s complex and by no means a ‘moneymaker’…meaning I’ve yet to figure out a quick enough way to do it such that when sold as a “product” it won’t either cost the customer thousands of dollars OR net me pennies per hour for my time.
THAT’S the kind of image you need to be able to generate if your hoping for 3d carves like that. If you google that term you’ll find all kinds of height maps that look like “funny greyscale images”. The source image for that carve is a pre-prepared height map. I’ve seen it many times before in my quest to turn greyscale photos into a 3d carve. The image will still burn correctly.He talks about using a discontinued product called artCam I havent found any replacements for it …yet The image may appear with vertical lines / gaps in it, this is not a problem. If the image shows up in the visualiser window it is working. Close Inkscape and Open grblControl and drag and drop your generated file on to the main window. Enter an Export directory to save the file to, give your file a name and set any required settings to suit your Laser engraver and click Apply. Then click on the Extensions menu and select the 305 Engineering extension and then click Raster 2 Laser Gcode generator. Export Image File : Exports a bitmap image of the drawing, the exported image will be the scaled depending on the current Export Resolution PPI which is defined in Export Settings/Image & Animation, if you are using Original Sizing.
To see if it works open Inkscape and create your image/design. Export Inkscape SVG: Exports a special SVG which can be imported into Inkscape with the layers preserved. Close the file and when asked if you want to save it click YES. If you are using the 64 bit version of Inkscape it will be in C/Program Files/Inkscape/Share/Extensions Step 3. Make a copy of it and keep it safe in case you need to replace it at some time. When I first started using GRBLControl with GCode generated by the 305 Engineers GCode Generator for Inkscape extension, the image would not appear in the visualiser window.
